Fatty liver: elevated fat (mainly triglycerides) in the liver, exceeding 5 % of the weight of the liver.

Causes

Fatty liver disease is the body's response to various metabolic disorders such as obesity (adipositas), fat metabolism disorders (hyperlipoproteinemia), diabetes mellitus, pregnancy or excessive alcohol consumption.
In rare cases, cirrhosis of the liver may well develop.

Prevention

Moderate alcohol consumption, low-fat diet, recognition and treatment of the underlying disease.

Symptoms

Often there are no special symptoms (manifestations), slight fatigue, weakness, vomiting, flatulence (increased flatulence in the intestines) are likely.

Diagnostics

Laboratory examinations:

  • liver function tests (transaminase);
  • blood tests (triglycerides, cholesterol);
  • ultrasound examination (sonography, possibly liver puncture).

Treatment

Treatment of the underlying disease, moderate alcohol consumption, a healthy diet (minimum fat and sugar). Medical treatment: often ineffective.
