Uterine cancer

Malignant tumors of the uterus are the most common cancers of the female genital organs. Distinguish between cervical cancer and endometrial cancer.

Both types of tumors come from different types of tissue in each case and differ in the possibility of early detection, symptoms, diagnosis and treatment.

Malignant tumors of the body of the uterus almost always come from the lining of the uterus (endometrium), which lines the organ from the inside. For this reason, cancer of the body of the uterus is also called cancer of the uterine lining, or, in medical parlance, endometrial cancer. Treatment of uterine cancer in Germany accounts for 5.1 percent of women. The Robert Koch Institute (2012) estimates that approximately 11,300 women a year develop uterine cancer in Germany. There are regional differences in the incidence of the disease, with North America and Western Europe leading other countries in this indicator. Most women get sick after menopause. In younger women, uterine cancer is less common. According to the Robert Koch Institute, the average age of women with uterine cancer is over 69 years.

Due to the good prognosis of uterine cancer treatment in Germany, the proportion of deaths is low at 0.5% (one in 200 women). The 5-year survival rate is between 75% and 83%. Thus, uterine cancer ranks tenth among cancer deaths in women. In recent years, there has been a decrease in mortality from this type of cancer.
