Lungs' cancer

Lung cancer in the narrow sense of the word means malignant neoplasms arising from the lung tissue, from the cells lining the airways (bronchi). Physicians also call them lung carcinomas or bronchial carcinomas.

In recent years, early diagnosis of bronchial carcinomas in Germany has received promising development. One of the innovations is low-dose helical computed tomography of the chest.

Recent German studies have been able to show that mortality from lung cancer can be reduced by 20%, if patients with a risk factor (long-term smokers) are regularly examined using this new CT method. The decrease in mortality is due to the fact that lung carcinomas are recognized earlier and at a stage at which they can be operated on.
