The Clinic of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Infectious Diseases specializes in preventing, diagnosing and treating digestive tract, liver disorders, pancreas, gallbladder, esophagus, stomach, small intestine and colon, infectious diseases, as well as in the treatment of conditions caused by metabolic disorders.

More than 4,500 endoscopic examinations, including about 3,000 endoscopic surgeries, are performed here every year, and more than 1,500 patients receive inpatient treatment.

Technological innovations in diagnostics

Thanks to the development of medical science and the ultra-modern technical equipment of the clinic, doctors can make more accurate diagnoses in a shorter time.

Diseases of the esophagus, stomach and duodenum are detected by a safe method of gastroscopy. Gastroscopy is recommended for recurring pain in the epigastric (pit of the stomach), difficulty swallowing, heartburn and diarrhea (diarrhea) of unknown origin. Gastroscopy is performed after intravenous administration of sedatives and hypnotics, therefore it does not cause any discomfort in the patient. The pancreas, located directly near the stomach, is examined using ultrasound sensors installed in it (endosonography method) and using the endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) method.

In the study of the small and large intestine, a small video capsule is used, which the patient swallows. The capsule is a miniature video camera, which allows not only to look inside the human digestive system, but also to examine in detail the state of its individual sections. In addition to diagnostic examinations, endoscopic therapeutic interventions such as implantation of a prosthesis in the esophagus and biliary tract, laser therapy for tumors or endoscopic removal of polyps can be performed using this technique. Thus, it is possible to abandon many burdensome surgical interventions.

Hepatology

The main specialization of the clinic is outpatient and inpatient treatment of liver diseases. We receive medical care for several thousand patients suffering from viral inflammation of the liver. With the help of the Fibroscan device, we have the opportunity, without resorting to a puncture, to conduct a liver examination for the presence and degree of fibrosis / cirrhosis (scarring). In recent years, significant progress has been made in the treatment of liver diseases, especially hepatitis C. In case of complications of liver cirrhosis, our specialists use modern endoscopic techniques such as the application of rubber ligatures for varicose veins of the esophagus. In the event that the use of endoscopic and medical therapy for esophageal varices and ascites is unjustified, we resort to the installation of a transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS) - a modern technique that can replace high-risk surgical interventions.

Cancer day care centre

In cases of tumor diseases of the esophagus, stomach, intestines, pancreas, liver, biliary tract, the clinic offers its patients all kinds of non-surgical therapy methods. Treatment of gastroenterological neoplastic diseases is carried out in close cooperation with surgeons and radiologists. Thanks to new therapeutic methods, many types of chemotherapy can be performed on an outpatient basis and refuse inpatient treatment of cancer patients. For this purpose, a gastroenterological oncological outpatient clinic was created. In the gastroenterological laboratory of functional diagnostics, modern methods for examining functional disorders of the esophagus, gastrointestinal tract and rectum are used. At a high level, diagnostics of such rectal functional disorders as difficulties in emptying the stomach and stool incontinence is carried out. In addition, many diseases of the gastrointestinal tract can be detected through a simple breath test.

Infectious diseases department

Another specialization of the clinic is the treatment of infectious diseases.

The infectious department of the clinic is spacious, equipped with diagnostic devices, and is also adapted for the care of seriously ill patients. Thanks to cooperation with pharmaceutical companies, in this rapidly developing area of medicine, we are able to apply the latest therapeutic concepts.
