Malignant tumors of the stomach develop most often in the gastric mucosa. In 95% cases they come from glandular tissue. Therefore, they are also called adenocarcinomas.

Much less common are tumors of the lymphatic tissue (so-called MALT-lymphomas) and the muscular layer of the stomach (sarcomas or gastrointestinal stromal tumors). In what follows, only adenocarcinomas will be discussed here.

Adenocarcinoma of the upper part of the stomach (cardia of the stomach) with the transition to the esophagus is referred to as cancer of the esophagus and is classified and treated according to the rules of this type of tumor.
