Speech development disorders are associated with the problem of language acquisition in children and occur when the course of the normal process of acquiring language skills is disturbed in terms of time.

Speech development disorders can affect all areas of the language (sound reproduction, vocabulary, grammar and the ability to apply language skills in practice), and it can also affect individual areas of the language.

Causes

Speech development disorders can occur both in isolation and in parallel with general developmental disorders or hearing disorders.

In most cases, the causes of speech development cannot be unambiguously determined.

Prevention

Regular preventive examinations by a pediatrician (the so-called O-Examinations) will help to identify possible risks of speech development disorders in a timely manner. No less important is a critical assessment of the parents themselves or the person who takes care of the child regarding speech development disorders. It is especially important to promptly identify and begin treatment of prolonged hearing disorders (for example, resulting from effusions in the middle ear) even before these disorders adversely affect the development of speech.

The process of speech development, being an integral part of the overall development of the child, will only benefit from the active and attentive attitude of parents to their child. Adults unconsciously adapt to the needs of the child and build their speech from short, simple sentences, repeating or emphasizing important information several times.
Please do not correct your child's speech errors immediately after the child has said something wrong, but use the correct word or expression in your own sentence, this will be absolutely enough for the child to understand important linguistic information.

Symptoms

Speech disorders in children are suspected when compared to the child's peers, the child speaks less clearly or little, or when the child cannot express himself intelligibly. At the same time, understanding of the language may also suffer.

Diagnostics

Diagnosis of speech development disorders covers all aspects of communication skills. Diagnosis begins with a medical examination of the organs of speech and hearing, diagnostics of hearing and speech skills. This determines the type and extent of the disorder, as well as identifying the strengths of the child, which are an important aspect for the treatment of disorders.

Treatment

Causes of impaired speech development, such as auditory disorders, should be eliminated as soon as possible. Therapy for speech development disorders is carried out individually, often with the help of therapeutic exercises, which are most often performed by speech therapists. For any other developmental disorders that are present along with impaired speech development, a comprehensively agreed concept of stimulating the development of the child is needed, including various forms of therapy.
